Step-by-step manual
Self-exclusion in Belgium
Belgium has a national exclusion register, EPIS (Excluded Persons Information System), run by the Gaming Commission. Every time someone enters a casino, slot arcade or betting shop, or logs into a licensed gambling site, their identity is checked against it. You can register yourself, a family member or other interested third party can ask for a ban, and some people are excluded by court decision or by profession. A voluntary ban has no fixed end date: it stays in place until you ask for it to be lifted, and lifting only takes effect three months after the Commission receives your request. Third-party bans last at least one year. The service is free.

The steps
- 1
Choose how to apply
If you have a Belgian identity card or residence permit (and so a national register number), apply online through the Gaming Commission's exclusion portal. This is the recommended route.
- 2
Log in and submit
Authenticate with the itsme app or a card reader and your Belgian eID, then confirm your request. The online route is the quickest way to be registered.
- 3
Or use the paper form
Without itsme or a card reader, complete the exclusion form, sign it, attach a copy of both sides of your identity document, and send it to the Gaming Commission, Kantersteen 47, 1000 Brussels, or via its contact page.
- 4
Name a confidant (optional)
You can nominate a trusted person who is informed of your ban and will be notified if you later ask to lift it, adding a layer of accountability.
- 5
What happens next
Once registered, you are refused entry to casinos, slot arcades and betting outlets, and blocked from licensed online gambling. Notify the Commission if your name or national register number changes.
- 6
Add blocking tools
EPIS cannot stop illegal sites. Use blocking software and ask your bank about gambling payment blocks.
- 7
Lifting the ban
Send a signed letter asking to lift the ban, with a copy of both sides of your ID, by registered mail to the same address. Access returns only after a three-month waiting period from receipt.
Before you start โ what to know
- Voluntary bans are open-ended; lifting has a three-month delay built in.
- A third party (for example a partner) can request a ban, which lasts at least one year and is decided after both sides are heard.
- Covers casinos, slot arcades and betting, online and offline; certain professions are automatically barred from casinos and arcades.
- Illegal sites on the Commission's blacklist do not check EPIS, so personal blocking tools still matter.
- Under-21s are already barred from all gambling, so EPIS mainly protects adults over 21.
