Step-by-step manual

Self-exclusion in India

India has no self-exclusion register because online money games are prohibited under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, which took effect on 1 May 2026. Licensed operators that once offered self-exclusion have stopped real-money play. Land-based casinos in Goa, Sikkim and Daman can refuse entry on request. The real risk now comes from illegal offshore and unauthorised sites, often promoted through messaging apps and social media. Protecting yourself therefore means blocking: device-level blocking software, bank and card controls, stopping UPI payments to unknown merchants, and support from family and mental health services.

The steps

  1. 1

    Close any remaining accounts

If you still hold accounts on former real-money gaming apps, withdraw balances and request account closure in writing. Delete apps and unsubscribe from messages.

  2. 2

    Install blocking software

Install a gambling blocking app on your phone and computer, and enable content filters in your app store and browser.

  3. 3

    Restrict payments

Ask your bank to block gambling-related card transactions, lower UPI limits in your payment app, and disable international transactions on cards if you do not need them.

  4. 4

    Leave betting groups

Exit Telegram, WhatsApp and social media groups that share betting links or tips, and block the accounts that promote them.

  5. 5

Ask land-based casinos to refuse entry

If you visit casinos in Goa, Sikkim or Daman, ask the casino's management in writing to refuse you entry, providing photo ID such as Aadhaar or a passport.

  6. 6

    Involve someone you trust

Tell a family member or friend, consider giving them oversight of your finances for a period, and call Tele-MANAS on 14416 for free counselling.

Before you start โ€” what to know

  • Players are not penalised under the 2025 Act; offences target those who offer, advertise or facilitate online money games.
  • Illegal sites may refuse withdrawals or misuse personal data; you have no regulator to complain to.
  • Report illegal gambling apps and ads through the national cybercrime reporting portal or helpline 1930.
  • State lotteries continue where states allow them, under the Lotteries (Regulation) Act 1998.
  • Debt from gambling can be serious; seek financial and legal advice early.

Frequently asked questions

Is online gambling legal in India?

No. From 1 May 2026, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 bans all online money games, including fantasy sports, rummy, poker and betting, whether based on skill or chance.

Are players punished?

The Act's penalties target operators, advertisers and those who facilitate payments, not players. Using illegal sites still carries serious financial and data risks.

What online games are still allowed?

E-sports and online social games without money stakes, which the Act aims to promote.
